Wannabe – Short Listed for 2nd round of the John Moores Painting Prize
The Wannabe series with its pop reference in the title also plays with religious iconography substituting the saints for nonchalant youthful figures. Dressed in svelte euro-cool attire and bidding for stardom against a background of the cosmos, Renaissance like moon rock, gold leaf and diamante gems play with a sense of past-ness . A mocking irony of youthful aspiration lacking substance.
Wannabe concentrates on the gap between aspiration and reality. The paintings are about the inconsistencies of mind body and practical contingency. The oddities and gaps that arise and the vicissitudes that generate an uncanny preternaturalism to existence.
